What is a cookie?

A cookie is a harmless text file that is stored in your browser when you access a Website for the first time. Cookies are used so the Website remembers your previous accesses to the site. Although many people do not know it, cookies have been in use for more than 20 years, when the first World Wide Web browsers started functioning.

What IS NOT a cookie?

A cookie is not a virus. It is not a Trojan. It is not a worm. It is not a spam. It is not a spyware. A cookie does not open pop-up windows.

What information does a cookie store?

Cookies generally do not store information related to you, like credit cards, bank information, photos, Identifications Documents, personal information… Information stored by cookies is technical: personal preferences, personalized content, etc.
With the use of cookies, the Web server does not associate you as an individual. It associates your browser. In fact, if you generally navigate with Internet Explorer, and you change in the same computer to Firefox or Chrome, you will see the Web does not notice you as the same person, because it associates the navigator and not the person.

What types of cookies exist?

  • Technical cookies: They are the most basic ones and allow, among other things, knowing when a human being or a specific application is going through the Website and when the browser is an anonymous user or a registered user. These are key tasks for the basic functioning of a dynamic Website.
  • Cookies for analysis: They gather information about the type of browsing that is being done: most accessed section, products seen, time of the day, language, etc.
  • Advertising cookies: Show advertising according the browse that is taking place, the country where it comes from, language, etc.

What are own cookies and third-party cookies?

Own cookies are the ones generated by the site you are accessing. Third-party cookies are the ones generated by other services or external vendors, like Facebook, Twitter, Google, etc.

What happens if I deactivate the cookies?

So you understand the significance of deactivating the cookies, we want to show you the following examples:

  • You would not be able to share content of the Website in Facebook, Twitter or any other social network.
  • The Website would not be able to adapt its content to your personal preferences, like it is done in online stores.
  • You would not be able to access the personal area of the Website. For example: Mi account, Mi profile, Mi Orders….
  • Online stores: It would be impossible to buy items on line. All your purchases would have to be done by telephone calls or physically going to the store.
  • You would not be able to customize your geographical preferences, like time slot, currency or language.

  • The Website would not be able to show advertising organized by sectors. This would reduce the advertising income the Website could get.
  • All social networks use cookies. If you deactivate them, you will not be able to use any social network.

Can cookies be eliminated?

Yes, they can be eliminated. They can also be blocked for a specific domain, generally or individually.
To eliminate cookies from a Website, you need to go to your navigator’s configuration. There, you will be able to look for the cookies associated to the specific domain and proceed to eliminate them.

Here are indications of how to access a specific cookie of the Chrome browser. Side note: the steps can change, depending on the browser’s version:

1.Go to Configuration or Preferences using the File menu or clicking in the personalization icon located in the upper right.

2.You will see different sections, click on the option Show for advanced options.

3.Go to Privacy, content Configuration.

4.Select All cookies and site’s information.

5.A list of all the cookies ordered by domain will be shown. To find easier the cookies of a determined domain, introduce, partially or completely, the address in the field Find cookies.

6.After this filter, the screen will show one or several lines with the cookies of the specific Website. Now, you only need to select it and press X to proceed to their elimination.

To access the cookie configuration of Internet Explorer follow these steps (they can change depending on the browser’s version):

1.Go to Tools, Internet Options.
2.Click in Privacy
3.Adjust the level of privacy you want.

To access the cookie configuration of Firefox browser, follow these steps (they can change depending on the browser’s version):

1.Go to Options or Preferences depending on your operating system.
2.Click Privacy.
3.In History, select Use a personalized configuration for the history.
4.Now, you will see the option Accept cookies. You can activate it or deactivate it depending on your preferences.

To access the cookie configuration of the Safari browser for OSX, follow these steps (they can change depending on the browser’s version):

1.Go to Preferences, then to Privacy.
2.Here, you will see the option Block cookies, so you can adjust the type of blocking you wish to do.

To access the cookie configuration of the Safari browser for iOS, follow these steps (they can change depending on the browser’s version):

1.Go to Adjustment, then Safari.
2.Go to Preferences and Privacy, you will see the option Block cookies, so you can adjust the type of blocking you wish to do.

To access the cookie configuration of the browser for Android devices, follow these steps (they can change depending on the browser’s version):

1.Execute the browser and press the Menu key, then Adjustments.
2.Go to Security and Privacy, you will see the option Accept cookies to activate or deactivate the square.

To access the cookie configuration of the browser for Windows Phone devices, follow these steps (they can change depending on the browser’s version):

1.Open Internet Explorer, then Plus, then Configuration
2.Now you can activate or deactivate the square Allow cookies.
